I'm still here ...

I have just been very busy adjusting to returning to work while maintaining my very important roles as a mummy and wife.

We have also been through a difficult period with bub and have finally got a paed diagnosis and plan of attack. E has been diagnosed with Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease - pathological refulx or as its commonly termed, silent acid reflux. This means that he suffers from a pretty severe burning or heartburn pain after feeding resulting in screaming inconsolable crying episodes that can last anywhere from 10 minutes to hours. Its completely heartbreaking and until now, there was not much we could do to ease his pain. The diagnosis is much welcome and I shed a few tears after the appointment as I had long suspected E had GORD having had a best friend whose daughter suffered the same severely from birth but was told by 2 GPs who specialise in child health that E just had infantile colic and I needed to persevere with burping, infant massage and natural colic remedies.

Part of E's treatment is starting solids a little earlier than 6 months so we have had fun experimenting with foods and he has taken to eating like he has been doing it all his life, polishing off the full amounts advised to serve and opening his mouth for the spoon from the very first offering. Using current guidelines, we are introducing a new food every 3 days and so far E has tried rice cereal, pear and pumpkin. We start with sweet potato tomorrow then avocado.

Apart from his pained episodes, E is growing rapidly and is such an absolute delight for me (and S) to be blessed with. He is a real little boy with a sense of adventure, some serious cheekiness, lots of personality and a very inquisitive nature. His smile melts my heart every single time I see it and his baby babble is the best sound I have ever heard. Every day brings us something new to learn about our baby and even with sleepless nights, I begin each day with a smile from E and it makes it all worthwhile. I'm not quite sure what we ever did with our time before E was born but I can tell you we dont seem to have a spare minute since he our life.

Here are some pics of my boy growing up...

and here are some baby purchases I can recommend:

Ergo pouches
- buy them here
Funny story about these: I sent S to go buy them the day after we got home from hospital. He returned with something completely different as a lady stopped him when he picked them up and told him they were useless. 19 weeks later, I finally get my way ha ha. E has never liked being wrapped so these work as he sleeps with his hands up  on his chest and still has lots of movement of them which is why he settles in it - he just cant make his restless face grabbing eye rubbing movements and it deflects his startle reflex as well. They are also good to transition as they have fasteners that allow you to have one arm out then both and use them as a sleeping bag.

Baby Einstein music
We were told to play classical music to E while he slept by a paed who told us they play it in special care nurseries as it is known to soothe and relax babies as they sleep, even helping to relax their intestine etc. Its  worth a try if it helps E settle and is very pleasant to listen to. We bought the 6 CD set that has music for the car, playtime and lullabies.

Wedgwood baby's first Christmas decoration
Emma from Living Through Our Renovations put me on to this and I'm so happy I got one from Peter of Kensingtons considering they sell out as soon as they are restocked. Its a beautiful piece to commemorate E's first Christmas and nice enough to display all year round in his room after I think.

We just celebrated E's baptism on the weekend and despite the windy rainy weather it went beautifully - even though he got a bit grizzly at the end of the service due to a late start and missing his nap and feed. It was lovely to celebrate with friends and E got ridiculously spoilt as usual including the most amazing cake a girlfriend made for him with only a few days notice...

I will try and keep up with blogging a little more regularly now that things are settling down and we have a pretty good routine worked out.
